Neese Gallery

For the spring semester the Neese Gallery will be converted into a conservation laboratory. Beloit College students working under the direction of fine art conservator Anton Rajer will be conserving and restoring plaster casts from the Wright Museum's collection. Visitors to the museum are welcome to observe the work as it progresses.

April 12: Roman Holiday. Ludi Cereales: The Roman Festival of the Goddess Ceres. A celebration of ancient Mediterranean cultures at Beloit College.  Join us as we celebrate the conservation of the Fisher Collection of Greek and Roman casts.  Festivities include activities for children and adults about ancient art, architecture, women, armies, literature, history, theatre, religion and much more.  Activities throughout the day.  The public is welcome and invited.

11 am. Blessing of community pets and animals, opening ceremonies.

11 am - 6 pm. Poetry readings, clothing and costumes of the Roman, Spartan and Athenian armies (try on the armor!)  The Roman 14th Legion will be camped on the Museum grounds.

7 pm. Toga Party inside the Wright Museum.  Dress as a god, a Greek or Roman, Egyptian, even barbarians are welcome.  We will honor our project donors and introduce imperial guests and members of the staff and Roman Legion.  Senators are welcome.

The power of visual images in modern society is undeniable. Drawing from the permanent collections of the Wright Museum of Art of political posters and prints, Beloit College's students will curate an exhibition that explores the tension between art and politics. Questions raised by this exhibit include:  How does government propaganda harness this power to create social norms?  Conversely, how do artists use this same visual power to critique the values of dominant society?

Lewis Koch (Madison, WI, class of 1971) draws upon aspects of photography, sculpture and text with which he calls attention to the often unremarked upon elements of everyday life. In this exhibition, he presents new color work and photographic assemblage, weaving a subtle visual narrative that critiques the globalization of conflict and endless war.
