[DSC_8905.JPG]A six-week program is offered on the Beloit College campus. The program is designed to give the students a feel for what it is like to go to college and to provide an academic program to help them be better prepared for their high school classes. Students also have the opportunity to explore subjects that may not be offered in a traditional high school setting.
The bulk of the curriculum that an Upward Bound participant experiences comes from the summer component. Students are selected by Upward Bound staff to attend the summer component and are invited to come to campus and live in the Beloit College dorms. This opportunity is available for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. During this time, students take an intensive class schedule to enhance their academic growth. This past summer, students received instruction is such classes as English, Math, Social Sciences, Art, Theatre, Spanish, Yearbook, Science, ACT test preparation, and Careers. Most of these courses were taught by local high school teachers and college professors.
Also integrated into the summer curriculum are cultural, career, and fun activities. Summer participants attend plays, art museums, dance performances, science museums, and college campus visits. Students can let loose with such activities as bowling, laser tag, go-karting, miniature golf, professional baseball games, and many more. This past summer, students enjoyed a Milwaukee Brewers game, a boat tour, a college fair, among other fun events and trips.
The highlight of the summer component is the trip during the last week of the program. All residential students that qualify for the summer component are eligible to participate in this event, barring any disciplinary actions. This past summer students took a bus to St. Louis, Missouri. The students visited St. Louis University, Washington University, Harris-Stowe State University, and the University of Missouri- St. Louis. Students involved in past summers at Beloit College have visited such places as Dallas, Philadelphia, Denver, St. Louis, Washington D.C., Memphis, and Nashville. Kim Linson, UB Alumna Class of 2008 sums up one of her summer trips nicely here.
