Forever Waltz
By Glynn Maxwell
Directed by Amy L. Sarno
8 p.m. Kresge Theatre Oct. 2, 3, 4, & Oct. 9, 10, 11, 2008

John, stricken with grief, unexpectedly finds himself in the
underworld. A guitar-strumming guide leads John to his one true love,
Evie. Yet, something's different: is this a mirage of Evie? Or, is it
her? Or, is it what remains of Evie after loving John? In any case,
John's guide requires an answer, "Decide at once whether you take
her. Sunlight or this." By delaying his decision, John gets caught in
a cyclical replay of his relationship that slowly reveals the power,
control, and even violence that were the realities of his love for
Evie. Glynn Maxwell's The Forever Waltz is a poetic, haunting, and
immensely witty interpretation of Orpheus's pursuit of Eurydice.

Importance of Being Earnest
By Oscar Wilde
Directed By Rod Umlas
8 p.m. Neese Theatre
Nov 13, 14, 15, & Nov. 20, 21, 22, 2008

In this brilliant variant on farce, Wilde infused the form, based on
comic complications of plot and improbability, with some of the most
witty and satirical dialogue ever written. The result is his most
popular play that derives its humor in part from the characters
maintaining fictitious identities to allow them to escape unwelcome
social obligations. Two young men seek the hands of two young women
in spite of social obstacles no more serious than the young men
themselves. Both face an additional obstacle - their chosen lovers
can only cherish a man named Ernest, and neither qualifies. The
outcome may never be in doubt, but the course of one of the great
comedies of the English language could not be more delicious or satisfying.

Doubt
By John Patrick Shanley
Directed by Rod Umlas
8 p.m. Kresge Theatre
Feb 26, 27, 28, & March 5, 6, 7, 2009

John Patrick Shanley subtitles his 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award
winning play, "a parable," a short story, usually of a familiar
occurrence, from which a moral lesson may be drawn. One might well
expect that truth could be deduced from such a moral tale but the
playwright has entitled his play Doubt, suggesting that the moral
lesson the play poses may entail ambiguity rather than certainty. In
this engrossing drama set in the1960s, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx
school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects
the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male
students. Is or is not Father Flynn a pedophile? Is or is not the
Mother Superior justified in the course of action she pursues? If
there's a possibility that children are being abused, should a moral
person act, even at the risk of targeting and destroying an innocent man?
Anna Karenina
by Helen Edmundson
Directed by Amy L. Sarno
8 p.m. Neese Theatre
April 23, 24, 25, & April 30, May 1, 2, 2009

Anna Karenina was a shy girl with red hands who married too young and
now longs for Vronsky, the man she can never completely have. Levin,
an aristocratic farmer, lingers on his estate determined to forget
Kitty, a beautiful young woman who believes Vronsky will marry her.
Anna and Levin are magnetic opposites somehow drawn together by the
regal Vronsky. Tolstoy's story of the conflict between honesty to
oneself in the face of society's pretensions is imaginatively crafted
in Edmundson's dazzling adaptation. Call the Box Office for tickets (608)363-2755 M-F 12:30-5pm
