Intelligence, imagination, curiosity…high achievement, personal responsibility, public contribution…ethical and thoughtful. These are the marks of a Beloit education. To help our students develop their capacities to live so robustly engaged, one powerful tool we can offer is mindfulness. Mindfulness (see more about it under “Mindfulness 101", below) is a habit of seeing clearly, listening deeply, concentrating steadily, speaking truthfully and interacting gently, the kind of traits expected of all “liberally educated” people, particularly necessary in our in our highly charged and rapidly accelerating, indeed bewildering, world. Come learn how mindfulness education is a fit for many Beloiters today.

In the past few decades, a fascinating partnership among medical clinicians and researchers, psychotherapists, neuroscientists, and meditation and yoga teachers has emerged, introducing the simple yet profound mind-body medicine called mindfulness. By learning to be mindful--aware in the present moment, intentionally open, accepting, and non-judging--many are developing clearer, more focused, emotionally flexible, and reflective ways to live and manage stress. Based on the pioneering work of Jon Kabat-Zinn and the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction movement, this workshop will introduce you to mindfulness conceptually and experientially. 'We Lived Civil Rights': Beloit College Greeks Integrate, an alumni panel

Were you a Greek? Do you remember when the first African American students were pledged into Greek organizations? Names like Sydney Shaw'63, Harry Hamilton'60, Patty Hamilton'63, Roger Dixon'68, Rudy Scott'68, and Greg George'70 come to mind, right? These events were important to the campus community in the '50s and '60s, and remain important today. Through his honor’s term research, Eric Hetland'12 interviewed dozens of alumni in order to make sure that this history is preserved. And now he is ready to share it with the Beloit community. Please join us for a conversation and reliving of these events. Eric will show portions of his documentary, 'We Lived Civil Rights': Beloit College Greeks Integrate, which features his alumni interviews. After which, an alumni panel will get the conversation started about what these events meant to them, what they learned from it, and what they gained from their Beloit education. We hope you can join us as we revisit a very important time and institution at Beloit.
