1996-1997 - Denise Levertov

Mackey ChairDenise Levertov (1923-1997) was perhaps the most influential woman poet in the United States since the 1940s. Levertov wrote and published 20 books of poetry, such as her Breathing the Water (1987) and A Door in the Hive (1989), and she also published criticism and translations. Among her many awards and honors, she received the Shelley Memorial Award, the Robert Frost Medal, the Lenore Marshall Prize, the Lannan Award, a Catherine Luck Memorial Grant, a grant from the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
