[Mackey Chair]Edward Hoagland is an author best known for his nature and travel writing. His nonfiction has been widely praised by writers such as John Updike, who called him "the best essayist of my generation." He's taught at The New School, Rutgers University, Sarah Lawrence College, The City University of New York, the University of Iowa, the University of California-Davis, Columbia University, and Brown University, and he is the recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships. In 2005, Hoagland retired from a teaching position at Bennington College in Vermont.
