Peace beyond differences will be the focus of a special event at Beloit College on the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “Sacred Chant: Singing for Peace and Healing on 9/11” will present an opportunity for campus and community members to unite in music, reflection and shared spiritual communion. The event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m., in Eaton Chapel, on the Beloit College campus. Like most events at the college, it is free and open to the public.
Beloit College sophomore Kevin Symanietz is coordinating the event. “In a world divided by war, threats of war and misperceptions, we as a community will transcend differences as we sing to ‘the One,’” he explains. The interfaith gathering will draw from the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic and Jewish faith traditions to introduce and celebrate devotional chants that speak to common human experiences. Pastor James Roberts, of Rockford’s Emmanuel Lutheran Church, will lead the event as church musicians sing and play the clarinet, drum, guitar, harmonium, Persian drum and string bass. “This peace-centered musical event will provide a unique experience and bring our corner of the world closer together,” Symanietz says.
“Sacred Chant: Singing for Peace and Healing on 9/11” is sponsored by the Spiritual Life Program at Beloit College. The program coordinates numerous interfaith events each semester.
