Jan Egeland, whose lifetime dedication to humanitarian needs has gained him recognition as “the world’s conscience,” delivered the annual Weissberg Lecture on Thursday, April 3, at 8 p.m. His talk, “Progress and Setbacks at Humanity’s Frontlines,” reflected his experiences as chronicled in his new book, A Billion Lives: An Eyewitness Report from the Frontlines of Humanity. His presentation was followed by a question and answer session with audience members.

The former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief also shared his experiences and views in classes and forums at the college, as well as with the Beloit Rotary Club and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
The world-renowned diplomat, who has served on the frontlines of most of the world’s major humanitarian crises, served as the 2008 Weissberg Distinguished Professor of International Studies at Beloit College. The Weissberg residency, now in its ninth year, brings active participants in world issues to Beloit to spend time with students, faculty and staff and with the greater Beloit community.
On Saturday, April 5, Egeland was joined in Pearsons Hall by leading diplomats and scholars in a discussion about “Responding to Humanitarian Emergencies.”
