Hometown: Portland, Ore.
Major/minor: Anthropology/studio art
[Max]Why he chose Beloit: I liked the atmosphere on campus and the overall vibe of the people. They are pretty open and creative, and everybody’s interested in so many things. When I visited as a prospective student, Beloit just left the best impression on me – and scholarships helped.
On the Beloit experience: It’s fun if you want to be really active academically, socially, or otherwise. It can be super busy and challenging, but also really fun. It’s a friendly place. I feel like I need to allot an extra 10 minutes everywhere I go because I see people I want to talk to.
How he makes the most of his interests at Beloit: I recently painted a graffiti-styled mural at the C-Haus (longtime campus hang-out and pub). It had been a goal of mine to get my artwork inside the bar since freshman year, and this semester after meeting Steve Bernini, the manager of C-Haus, I asked him about it, got the design approved, he ordered paint for me, and voilá.
On his future graffiti plans: I’m working toward increasing artwork on campus in two ways. One is to create a legal graffiti wall, or free wall, on campus, and the other is to create a committee that would review mural proposals and encourage students to submit proposals to paint in places such as Pearsons Hall, the residence halls, or any approved location on campus to beautify those spaces.
Why he likes graffiti art: I really like seeing my style and skill progress over time, as well as the process of having each piece progress from start to finish as I’m working on it. I also like being able to do something positive with graffiti art. Several years ago I began advertising my work on Craigslist to get commission jobs. Since then I have started a website, have painted canvases, interior walls, trucks, exterior walls, and signs for clients. Notable commission jobs include multiple murals for Portland Public Schools, a couple photography studio backdrops, as well as a large mural/ sign for a garden supply store.
When he’s not doing graffiti: I’m an RA, a member of the Frisbee team, and a member of the Big Spoon Dining Coop. I see friends, and classwork keeps me busy.
