Jishnu's Beloit
Hometown: Bombay, India
Major: Communications
What activities he’s involved in at Beloit: Currently I’m working on (the play) Kid Simple: A Radio Play in the Flesh as the foley artist (a sound effects guy extraordinaire basically) and sound designer. I’ve acted in a number of shows, but this is the first time I’ve ever been a tech. I’m also a videographer for the school working in the Office of Communications and Marketing and a technician at Beloit Access Television Studios. I practically live at the TV studio downtown at CELEB. It’s really cool because I’m doing so much with a lot of creative freedom.
Why he chose Beloit: As an international student, unfortunately I wasn’t able to visit here or talk to anyone on the phone or do any kind of first-hand primary research. It was all secondary stuff based off the website. I liked the small student-teacher ratio and that there was a large selection (of activities and classes) for me to choose from. I was able to try a whole bunch of things until I found my niche.
How his time at Beloit has been: My experience at Beloit’s been great. After four years here I found that it’s definitely the kind of place I’d like to come back to. It’s the kind of place I wish I could stay longer at. It’s a very genuine, welcoming, honest community of people who really do care about the students, and students do care about each other. It’s the kind of place where they treat you as a responsible adult who is able to make his or her own decisions.
On why Beloit isn’t just about academics: There are a whole lot of options out there for you. There’s a whole lot of stuff you can do that falls outside the usual academic field. I’ve done a lot of stuff in the theatre, I’ve done a lot of stuff making video, I’ve done a lot of stuff with Greek life, and I’ve done a lot of stuff with orientation leadership.
How he describes Beloit: Beloit’s the kind of place where you can be who you want to be. It’s the kind of place where you can shape your future. It’s the kind of place where they encourage that. You’re given guidance and reassurance and a safety net by your peers and professors and staff who are willing to help you explore and try new things.
On spreading the word about Beloit: I would definitely recommend Beloit to others. The fact I put in a lot of my time toward promoting Beloit in the jobs I do. I’m making videos for something I genuinely do care about. These are videos I make for Beloit College, and I really mean it when I say I love Beloit College. So it all sort of comes full circle.
