Senegal Program in Dakar - fall semester

"Comment ça va ?" -- "jaam nga am?"

Students interested in studying in a full-immersion French program in francophone West Africa could not choose a better place than Senegal, located just north of the equator on the west coast of Africa. A country teeming with activity in a sometimes turbulent continent, Senegal has been a remarkable oasis of political and social stability.  Program students spend three months in Dakar, a cosmopolitan capitol that offers a cultural microcosm of life in Senegal, and one month in St-Louis, 200 miles to the north of Dakar. During the sojourn in St-Louis, students make several visits to rural areas.  The visits, residency in two cities, course work and close interactions with Senegalese and other West Africans combine to deepen students’ understanding of historic and contemporary Senegal and its future.

The Beloit College program to Senegal was created in 1995 to respond to the growing demand among Beloit students for the opportunity to study in francophone Africa. The program in fall 2009 is in collaboration with Kalamazoo College to provide a rich curriculum with many opportunities for cooperative learning with Senegalese and other African students as well as community members. The program takes place in the fall semester, and provides opportunities for experiential learning.
