Prerequisites
Students should have completed the equivalent of five semesters of college-level French, and be enrolled in a French course the term or summer prior to departure. Preference will be given to those who have also taken one or more courses relating to African history, society, culture, politics or the like. In lieu of such coursework, students will need to provide evidence of preparation through independent research and other activities or through projects on West Africa done in the context of their courses. Students attending other colleges are welcome to apply for this program.
Beloit students should plan on enrolling in a .25 unit modular course IDST - Developing Intercultural Competencies the semester prior to studying in Dakar.
The Application Process
Beloit College provides opportunities for immersion in other cultural and educational environments through study abroad. Students are expected to gain new perspectives on their fields of study, develop intercultural competencies and communication skills, learn others' perspectives, reflect on their own assumptions and values while abroad, and learn about and from the environments in which they live and study. Students prepare for study abroad through coursework, research, and other experiences. They are given an opportunity to demonstrate this preparation in the study abroad application and interview.
Students planning to study in Senegal should:
- think about your learning goals
- discuss your plans with your academic advisor
- attend a general study abroad information session at OIE
- meet with Prof. Scott Lyngaas, the faculty advisor, and other students who have been on the program or who have experience living in Senegal
- make an appointment to talk with an advisor in OIE for specific program information and advice
- consider the courses you would take at the Baobab Center and how you can learn as much French as possible before you leave the U.S.
- attend an OIE session on how to write successful application essays
- do some research on Senegal and the region
- think about how you would cope in an environment where you will be speaking a language other than English 24 hours a day
- write a draft of your academic rationale
- meet again with your advisor regarding recommendations and guidance on application essays
- turn in a completed application, and schedule an interview
