Cross-Cultural Psychology Program - Fall 2008

Tartu, Estonia, and Fez, Morocco

Open to students from other colleges.

This program is designed for students interested in the study of psychology in diverse cultural settings abroad. Participants are immersed for two periods of seven weeks each in two distinct societies, Estonian and Moroccan, with sharply contrasting ethnic, religious, linguistic and geographical characteristics. Rooted in the context of language and culture in their respective settings, students examine the universal and culture-specific components of psychological phenomena.

In both countries, students study cross-cultural psychology, language, history, arts, and literature in translation. They also conduct an independent research project.

The program is offered every second year, in the fall semester. The U.S. faculty leader in the fall 2008 is Larry White, Professor of Psychology at Beloit College.

The psychology course, taught by the faculty director, extends throughout the program and is taken in both countries. All courses, except for Estonian and Arabic, are taught in English by the faculty direcor, faculty at The University of Tartu or the Arabic Language Institute in Fez.
