Beloit College’s Weissberg Program hosts two major events each year: a fall lecture and career panel on international human rights and a spring residency of the Weissberg Chair, a prominent figure active in international affairs who is selected each year. The Weissberg Chair gives a variety of informal and formal talks over a week-long residency that concludes with panel discussions with experts in the chair’s area of interest. Sheila Tlou (pictured above), former Minister of Health for Botswana, was Weissberg Chair in 2010.
[Alicia Ely Yamin Field]Made possible by a trust established for Ivan Stone by his wife Janice Shrimpton Stone, the annual Stone Lecture in International Affairs takes place during International Education Week following the conclusion of the International Symposium. Stone lecturers are invited to address international topics that are particularly timely. For many years, Ivan Stone chaired Beloit College’s government department and served as the first director of the World Outlook Program, which established study abroad as a feature of Beloit College’s educational program.
Beloit College celebrates International Education Week each November along with colleges and universities across the country. Beloit College’s celebration typically engages the campus in both scholarly events (faculty talks, the annual Stone Lecture in International Affairs, and the International Symposium) and entertainment (Iron Chef competition, student dance performances, and theatrical and musical productions).
[International Symposium - Panel 1]The annual International Symposium showcases students’ international learning, with presenters discussing research and other activities undertaken during a study abroad semester. The symposium gives presenters and opportunity to analyze, reflect on, and share aspects of their education that took place off campus. Audience members, in turn, expand their knowledge and gain a window on a variety of study abroad experiences.
