On Location: Mapping the World
We're looking for fifteen returned study abroad students to create mental maps of the locations in which they studied. Pizza will help fuel the creativity; paper and markers will be available, but participants may also want to bring artifacts from their time abroad to illustrate their maps. In the last half hour of the event, the maps will be mounted and hung in Hales Gallery. An opening will take place in Hales Gallery at 7:00 immediately following the event.

Charette: a collaborative session in which a group solves a problem or completes a task within a limited time. Traditionally these have had close ties to fields such as architecture and graphic design. Our version is both a workshop and a performance piece and will result in an exhibit. As a participant in the charette, your job will be to create a "map" related to your study abroad, but anybody can watch you workâor come look at the resulting exhibit.
Map: a visual representation of a place and the mapmaker's associations with it.
Locations:
- where you studied abroad
- the room where the charette will take place (Mather's)
- the exhibit space (Hales Gallery)
- the paper that will contain your map
Materials:
You provide the memories and associations, and any artifacts (photos, scraps of paper, etc) you want to include in your map.
We'll supply the pizza needed to fuel your creativity, as well as sheets of paper, markers, pencils, scissors, tape, and glue.
