Mike Byrd P'03 and David's Fund
Father Carries Lost Son's Legacy Forward in Ecuador Come learn about the inspiring work of one Beloit parent in Quito, Ecuador, who turned despair into hope! Mike Byrd is the father of David Byrd-Felker, a Beloit College student who went missing in Ecuador in 2002 and was never found. Mike has retired from the faculty of UW-Madison to create David's Fund, supporting Ecuadorian students access and succeed in higher education. He spends six months a year in Ecuador, working with the Centro del Muchacho Trabajador, in Quito.

David Byrd-Felker'03 was a Presidential Scholar at Beloit College, majoring in Spanish and Philosophy. He was one of the founders of Voodoo Barbie, a comedy improv troupe, and a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. During his sophomore year, he spent a semester studying at the Universidad Católica in Quito. During his time there, he worked for the Salesian project Chicos de la Calle, which provides educational opportunities for impoverished students. After completing his semester at the university, David set out to travel in southern Ecuador. He disappeared near the town of Zamora in late July of 2002. Despite an extensive search, no clues have been found as what happened to David.
