The work of Assistant Art Professor Scott Espesethis currently on exhibition in Brooklyn, N.Y.’s SUGAR gallery (http://sugarbushwick.com/home.html) as part of a series of both single and two-person shows His work currently on display includes drawings in both graphite and ballpoint pen.
Back in Beloit, Espeseth is currently teaching a First-Year Initiatives (FYI) class on the aesthetics of reproduction. (Usually his classes center on drawing, design, and print-making.) While it is not a studio art class, it does include a studio art component. Students write papers that they then use as the basis for a studio art assignment.
Much like he encourages his students to take creative approaches to the studio art component, Espeseth employs various methods for drawing. He previously worked in silverpoint, an art historical medium that predates pencils. Silverpoint tarnishes, changes colors, and has warmth to it, Espeseth said. In his recent drawings, he utilized a ballpoint pen, commonly used by students doodling in class.
“I always try to be making art,” Espeseth said. “(Ballpoint pen) is not really an arty medium. Usually drawings are in charcoal and pencils. There’s a funny thing that happens with an image when you use a ballpoint pen—you can make a name in block letters and turn it into a spaceship.”
