Artist, educator and activist Favianna Rodriguez will be the speaker at Beloit College’s 165th commencement ceremony later this spring. In a letter to their classmates yesterday, Beloit’s senior class officers announced that Rodriguez had accepted their invitation to deliver the keynote address on Sunday, May 17, 2015 on the campus of Wisconsin’s oldest college.

Beloit College has received a record number of applications for its next entering class. In response to this interest, and to accommodate numerous requests for an extension, the Office of Admissions at Beloit is extending its priority application deadline from Jan. 15 to Feb. 1.

A committee of Beloit College faculty, staff and students has just released an ambitious set of sustainability goals aimed at reducing the college’s energy and water consumption over the next three years while increasing the college’s overall recycling rate, native species plantings and more.

Regina Hendrix, a Beloit native dedicated to serving students and community, will deliver the 11th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Convocation address on Monday, Jan. 19, at Beloit College. The Beloit City Councilor and Beloit College staff member will deliver a talk titled “A Dream Deferred?” at the 4:15 p.m. event in the college’s Eaton Chapel (700 College Street). The event is free and open to the public.

In its 2015 rankings of the country’s “Best College Values,” Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has once again called out Beloit College for delivering “a quality education at an affordable price.” In the rankings out this week, Beloit appears alongside the University of Notre Dame, the University of Michigan, and the University of Chicago on a top 25 list of Midwestern colleges and universities.

With input from friends, classmates, and family members, Beloit College has established the Luke Somers Memorial Fund to honor alumnus Luke Somers’08 and his work, and to help assure that his legacy and example endures and inspires future students.

Beloit College is planning to hold a remembrance event on Sunday, Dec. 14, for Luke Somers, an alumnus killed in Yemen. According to press reports, Somers, a member of the class of 2008 (B.A. in Creative Writing), was killed during a rescue attempt over the weekend. He had been in Yemen working as a freelance journalist and photographer when he was kidnapped in September 2013.
