Beloit College is one of the best colleges in the country to work for, according to a new survey released today (July 21) by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Beloit was recognized in the category of Tenure Clarity and Process, to which Provost and Dean Ann Davies calls a testament to the value of shared governance.

“Our Faculty Status and Performance Committee has dedicated itself to developing expectations for tenure and promotion that encourage innovation and intellectual growth while also providing substantial feedback on performance,” Davies said. “Those who serve on that committee deserve a lot of credit for their hard work.”

Beloit also was honored in the Teaching Environment category.

“In publications like U.S. News & World Report, our peers regularly recognize us as one of the top colleges for undergraduate teaching. While gratifying, those kinds of surveys beg the question of how and whether we’re really living up to that reputation,” Davies said. “Therefore, it’s encouraging to learn directly from our own faculty that Beloit recognizes and rewards high-quality teaching. It means we’re hitting the bull’s eye of our mission.”

The results, released in the newspaper's seventh annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 43,000 employees at 278 colleges and universities. A total of 388 Beloit faculty and staff received the survey, and the overall response rate was approximately 57 percent.

In all, the survey recognized only 92 institutions. Results are reported for small, medium and large institutions, with Beloit included among the small colleges with 2,999 students or fewer.

Published since 1966, The Chronicle of Higher Education is a leading news source for higher education. The newspaper is subscribed to by more than 64,000 academics and has a total readership of more than 315,000.
