The Beloit College board of trustees approved at its meeting in late April the tenure and promotion of two faculty members along with two sabbaticals.

Kathy Greene from the education and youth studies department was promoted to full professor, and Wright Museum of Art Director Joy Beckman is now an associate professor of art history.

In addition to her promotion, Beckman’s sabbatical request for the 2014-15 academic year was also approved. She will spend the time finishing a book called Three Requiems on the Banks of the Yangtze. The book will explore grave artifacts and funeral rites of three affluent people from Ancient China around the close of the fourth century BCE.

Finally, Associate Professor of Anthropology Jennifer Esperanza’s sabbatical request for the spring of 2015 was also approved. She will serve as a visiting associate professor at University College Roosevelt in Middelburg, Netherlands, where she will teach an anthropology course and give weekly seminars to the UCR faculty on liberal arts teaching from a U.S. perspective. In addition, she will conduct research (and eventually publish) on the rise of European liberal arts colleges during a time when American liberal arts institutions are coming under fire from the media.
