Gwartney will give the June and Edgar Martin Memorial lecture on "Institutions, Economic Freedom, and the Wealth of Nations." The large and persistent gap in the infant mortality rate between blacks and whites was the topic of a speech Assistant Professor of Health and Society Rongal Nikora gave last week at his alma mater, the University of New Mexico. In his talk, he made the theoretical claim that the gap is due to three stages of embodiment.

The first play of the Beloit College theatre season, Coward Land, was a 2012 semi-finalist at the National Playwrights Conference held at the famed Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Local audiences will get the opportunity to see it performed from Thursday, Oct. 3 through Saturday, Oct. 5 and from Thursday, Oct. 10 through Saturday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. in the Kresge Theatre on the Beloit College campus.

Fifteen rising juniors and seniors will compete to participate in paid internships at Beloit organizations during the summer of 2014, thanks to an $80,870 grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation. The program, titled Think BIG!, partners Beloit College faculty with local leaders to provide valuable beyond the classroom learning experiences connected to the students’ liberal arts education.

Russian Professor Donna Oliver never intended to publish her first-year Russian textbook, but, with the assistance of an alumna, Russian Full Circle was released by Yale University Press in late August.
