Susan Rice conducts the Beloit College Chamber Singers, Anacrusis, Masterworks Chorus, Schola cantorum, and teaches Fundamentals of Music and Vox feminae.
During her residency at the University of Illinois, Rice served as conductor of the Illini Women’s Chorus, interim conductor of the UI Oratorio Society and assistant conductor of the Opera Program and UI New Music Ensemble. She was Director of Choral Music at Pocono Mountain Senior High School in Swiftwater, Pennsylvania for eleven years and has held positions at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ (Champaign, IL) and Mount Pocono United Methodist Church (Mt. Pocono, PA). An active clinician and voice teacher, Rice has worked with choirs in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin.
Rice has studied conducting with Joe Miller, Chester Alwes, Fred Stoltzfus, John Leman, Eduardo Diazmuñoz and Donald Schleicher, voice with Grace Mannion, Stephen Paynter and Robin Rice, and piano with Eugene and Elizabeth Pridonoff and Nancy Bachus. Her research interests include sketch study and compositional process, performance practice of the Baroque and Classical eras, the historical, sociological and gender issues surrounding women's choruses and singing societies, and multidisciplinarity as a means of engaging the liberal arts within the choral experience.
