Matthew Bishop

Matthew Bishop, an avid performer, arranger, and teacher of music, began playing guitar in punk bands at the age of 16. Feeling that he had found his calling he resolved to devote his life to the study of the instrument (although he doesn’t play as much punk music as he used to).

Matthew received his doctorate in guitar performance and musicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007.  A native of Madison, he did his undergraduate study at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, where he had the opportunity to study with many great players in many styles.  Having returned to Madison for graduate work, he delved more deeply into classical music, earning master’s and doctoral degrees.

Dr. Bishop has been a member of the faculty at Beloit College since 2004.  An avid performer on guitar and lute, he has performed, taught master-classes, and lectured across the United States.  In addition he has brought a great deal of music to the guitar through transcription, including music of the Renaissance to modern works.

Dr. Bishop has a great love of all music, and enjoys teaching a variety of styles to a wide range of age groups.  Through this multi-faceted approach, he feels that music can be used to bring people together with a sense of musical community.
