The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures nominates its students for the prizes and honors listed below. Note, students may not self-nominate.  Faculty members will nominate students based on their performance and qualifications.

Departmental Honors
Students with an outstanding grade point average overall, a minimum 3.6 G.P.A. in the MLL major, and consistent excellence of coursework within the major may be invited by a MLL faculty member to complete a scholarly project in the senior year (1 unit of Special Project 390). Additionally, to be awarded departmental honors a student must complete his or her scholarly project to the satisfaction of the sponsoring faculty member and an additional faculty reader.

Heather Lutton Spanish Prize
The Spanish faculty will nominate an outstanding Spanish major, ordinarily in his or her junior year. The award is granted on Honor's Day in the spring.

Sonia Moncada Street Endowed Award in Spanish
In memory of Prof. Jack Street's wife, Sonia Moncada Street, who taught Spanish in the Beloit schools for many years before her retirement, the prize is awarded by the Spanish faculty to an outstanding Spanish major, ordinarily in his or her junior year. The award is granted on Honor's Day in the spring.

Phi Sigma Iota
Phi Sigma Iota is a national honor society that recognizes outstanding students in the academic fields of foreign language, literature, or culture.

To be eligible a student must be:

1. A junior or a senior
2. Enrolled in a 200-level or higher foreign language or comparative literature course at the time of nomination
3. Have a overall G.P.A. of 3.250 and in foreign languages courses taken at Beloit College.

ALL-COLLEGE AWARDS AND PRIZES:

Martha Peterson Prize
The prize was established as a class gift by the Class of 1981 as a way to honor one senior from the graduation class.  The recipient of this prize should

a) exemplify academic excellence within his/her major as well as in disciplines throughout the Divisions;
b) be strongly committed to the values, ethics, and moral standards that are encouraged at Beloit College and inherent in a liberal arts education; and
c) have shown leadership and involvement in College programs that support the mission and preservation of Beloit College’s commitment to the liberal arts tradition.

Roxie Alexander Memorial Award 
The award is a cash prize given yearly to a woman who has completed her first or second year at Beloit and who has a demonstrated a record of either academic excellence or worthwhile community service, preferably both.

Eligibility is limited to international students, first-generation college students, and minority students/ students of color.  The award is given "in loving memory of Professor Roxie Alexander: teacher, scholar and raconteur, whose one-person support system for international, first generation, and minority students was a hallmark of the Beloit tradition for two decades.”

Student Support Services “Academic Achievement Award”
This award recognizes the personal journey and academic accomplishments of one of our SSS seniors. This award is selected by the SSS staff in collaboration with the Beloit College Faculty. The student should have demonstrated a commitment to his or her education, served as a leader in the classroom, or impressed faculty in other ways (either in our out of the classroom). 

Sikandra Spain Award
Named in honor and memory of my former student, class of 1976, who perished suddenly in 1981, this award is given to students who are graduating, plan a career in international relations and/or have contributed to international understanding on campus, and have earned a high grade point average.
