NestorNestor Zavala
Hometown: Des Plaines, Ill.

Major(s): International Relations and Business Administration

Nestor grew up in a poor rural community of Mexico, where as a kid he made money by selling the confetti he picked up from the floor of parties. While at Beloit, he was a Kemper Scholar and interned at a prominent Chicago gym in its management department. Now he will be pursuing a career in business. “He has received so many outstanding job offers that his biggest problem is to pick what city he'll be moving to,” said Associate Professor of Political Science Pablo Toral.

BockZachary Bock
Hometown: Sycamore, Ill.
Major(s): History and Political Science

While at Beloit, Zach won the college’s Tutor of the Year award for his help with a logic course and he interned with the Wisconsin Supreme Court. He plans to substitute teach for a year before attending law school.

 

ConnellyBert Connelly
Hometown: Sharon, Mass.

Major: Creative Writing
Minor: Journalism

Bert served as the editor-in-chief of The Round Table, completed an honor's project for the English department for which he wrote fiction and a screenplay, and he participated in the improv comedy troupe, Voodoo Barbie, for four years. He studied abroad in Spain, and he worked as a social media consultant for a start-up tech company in Boston for two years. He was on the board of the college’s radio station, a captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team, and an intern for the Beloit International Film Festival. Bert will be starting a career in writing.

ChiquoineElizabeth Chiquoine
Hometown: Reedsburg, Wis.
Major: Health and Society

Minor: Biology

A winner of the Claudette Cummings Prize in Community Health, Liz is interested in the challenges of getting physicians to work in rural areas.  She studied abroad in South Africa and worked with the Beloit Public Health Initiative. She will learn more about local health issues as an honors term student at Beloit College. Liz, who won the Martha Peterson Prize at Commencement, hopes to attend medical school.

CleoKun “Cleo” Zhang
Hometown: Jiaxing, China

Major(s): Mathematics and International Relations

Cleo will return to China for a year where she will work for the Shanghai Institute of Finance and Law and the Non-Profit Incubator (NPI) in Shanghai. Next fall, she will come back to the United States to pursue a master of international affairs degree with a concentration on human rights in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University.

Kidan Araya
ArayaHometown: Sacramento, Calif.
Major(s): International Relations and Environmental Studies

Minor: Health and Society

Kidan is the daughter of a political activist who had to run away from Ethiopia after learning he would be killed by the police. He found refuge in Sudan, where a Beloit alumnus helped get him into the U.S. and with a family in Rockford.

While at Beloit, Kidan studied abroad in Cameroon, Africa, participated in the McNair Scholars Program, and had internships in New Orleans and Boston, working with local communities on issues of food access, food security, and hunger. She will be pursuing a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Washington-Seattle.

MezaDiana Gutierrez-Meza
Hometown: Madison, Wis.
Major: Health and Society

Minor: Women’s and Gender Studies

Born and raised in the Ecuadoran jungle, Diana never dreamed of an education. She came to Beloit where she distinguished herself as an excellent student and community activist. She completed the McNair Scholar Program and spent a summer in Ecuador working on a program funded by the Ecuadorian government to teach rural communities about basic public health and reproductive rights. She flew to rural communities in the jungle, where she felt she could connect to the local communities thanks to her own story.

She is going to the University of South Florida to earn her master’s degree in public health.

AlrichClaire Alrich
Hometown:  Evanston, Ill.
Major(s): Theatre Arts (Dance) and Rhetoric and Discourse

Claire was a dancer and choreographer at Beloit who also worked as a tour guide for the school and a costume designer for dance performances. This summer she is headed to Prague to perform followed by some traveling in Europe. After that she plans to move to New York to pursue dance and choreography.

 

GroveJoanna Albertson-Grove
Hometown: St. Paul, Minn.
Major(s): Political Science

Joanna researched environmental activism in France in the summer of 2010 and studied politics and history in Budapest, Hungary in the fall of 2011, both with help from competitive grants awarded by the college.

She is headed to northern Namibia to work on a conservation agriculture project with the National Cooperative Business Association's CLUSA International program.

She will help gather data to teach farmers sustainable farming methods to increase productivity and respond to recent extreme weather patterns.

Our Beloit - IsaacIsaac Bamgbose
Hometown: Chicago, Ill.

Major: Economics and Management

Now that Isaac is graduated, he will be working for Hendricks Commercial Properties in Beloit as a financial analyst. He gained plenty of experience for his new job at Beloit College, where he interned with the Office of Institutional Research & Planning and worked as a senior manager at Belmark, the student-run market research and consulting organization.

HeinzStephen Heinz
Hometown: Chicago, Ill.
Major: Theatre, Dance and Media Studies

Steve, who attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools before coming to Beloit, served on the college's Committee on Diversity and Inclusive Excellence and represented the school in the Washington Media Scholars Foundation's 2013 Case Competition. As for future plans, he wants to get involved in politics, the political media scene, or filmmaking.
