Leupp Black-on-White - CA. 1200-1250

Leupp Black-on-White is a relatively rare type, even in the area of production around the Hopi Buttes. Design fields are composed of repeated small elements, and usually have a higher ratio of black to white, creating negative-painted designs. The gray unslipped surface is characteristic of the type.

Characteristics

Paste: Medium to dark gray
Temper: Crushed sherd, quartz or volcanic rock fragments
Surface: Thick, lightly polished white slip, exteriors unfinished
Forms: Bowls, jars with flaring necks
Design: Closely spaced small elements
