La Plata Black-on-Orange - CA. 750-900

La Plata Black-on-Orange is the earliest black-on-red type in the northern plateau area. Vessels were slipped and were fired in an oxidizing atmosphere. Designs are similar to La Plata Black-on-White, consisting of linear and small repeated elements.

Characteristics

Paste: Light gray to buff
Temper: Coarse sand
Surface: Clear orange slip
Forms: Deep, straight-sided bowls, rarely seed jars
Design: Small repeated elements and ticked or fringed lines arranged in radial fashion from bowl center to rim.
