Holbrook Black-on-White - CA. 1050-1150

Holbrook A Black-on-White is very similar to Black Mesa Black-on- White in its designs. A second type, Holbrook B, has painted decoration more consistent with another Tusayan White Ware type, Sosi Black-on-White. Paste color and temper distinguish Holbrook from these other types.

Characteristics

Paste: Dark to light gray
Temper: Crushed sherd
Surface: Thick, chalky white to light gray slip, lightly polished
Forms: Bowls and jars
Design: Thick-lined designs with pendant triangles lined with dots, checkerboards
Comparisons: Designs similar to Black Mesa Black-on-White, but the latter has light paste and sand temper
