Ancient Venezuela

Betijoque is situated off the east coast of Lake Maracaibo. This hollow figure, with its wide head and body, flattened at the top, is reminiscent of Colombian figures of the Quimbaya region some 400 miles away.

The diagonal- patterned painting, visible on the head of the figure, is characteristic of the Betijoque style.
