1. What is Find It?

Find It provides direct links from citations in certain databases to the full text of the articles for those citations, if they are available. Find It sometimes appears as a link within database records, but it usually appears as this button:

Find It can also provide links to other helpful resources and services including:

* Links to full text.
* Find it in Beloit College Library Catalog, Belcat, for a print version of the cited article.
* Request an item via Interlibrary Loan.
* Capture Citation Information so you can cut and paste the citation to your documents or download into a citation management program
* Search the web for the article.

* Need assistance with finding the article? Find It doesn't seem to be working? Have comments? Contact libref@beloit.edu.

Please note:

* The appearance of the button may vary, depending on the database you are in.
* Not all of the above services will always appear when you click the Find It button. It depends on the database that you are searching and the information that is available for the citation.
* Not all databases support article linking technology and will not display Find It button. If you aren’t sure if the database you are working in is one of these databases, just contact libref@beloit.edu.

2. How do I use Find It?

Find It buttons appear in many of the library's databases. When you search in a database, the Find It button will appear in the records you retrieve. Click the button to see a menu with links to full text and other resources.

3. Can I use Find It from home?

Yes. Current students, faculty, and staff may access Find It services from off-campus via the Beloit College proxy server. For more information, see the EZproxy FAQ.

4. Why don't I see any Find It buttons or links?

* The database may not work with Find It.
* The citation you found may not have enough information available to link with Find It.
* Find It link may be hard to find. Find It links may appear in different places depending on the database that you are using.
* Occasionally, the problem is because JavaScript is disabled in your browser. If it’s turned off, Find It buttons will not appear. If you need help with JavaScript, please contact ISR Computing Support/Help Desk at isrhelp@beloit.edu

5. Why didn't I get a full text link for my article?

* No electronic full text version is available for that journal through Beloit College
* No electronic full text for this journal is available for this specific year through Beloit College.
* An error in the database or library records may prevent Find It from finding the article. Please contact libref@beloit.edu if you believe online full text is available.

Also, please search by periodical title in our online catalog, Belcat, for a possible print version of the journal. If there are no other copies in the library, you can order it via Interlibrary Loan.

6. What should I do to obtain full text if it is not available electronically?

* Search for the periodical title in Belcat for a copy in print or another format.
* If there are no other copies in the library, you can order it via Interlibrary Loan.

7. What do I do when I get an error or some other "not found" message?

* If the article is very recent, it's possible that it has not been loaded on the publisher’s web site yet, so Find It cannot retrieve full text.
* Find It links may be wrong and need to be updated. Please let the library staff at libref@beloit.edu know about any problems you may have.

8. Why am I prompted to login to full text even though the Find It menu says that full text is available?

There may be a problem with the library’s subscription. Please contact libref@beloit.edu and let us know about this problem.

9. When I click on "Link to full text," why do I only get to the journal's home page?

Find It will try to get you as close to the full text as it can. Often, because of the structure of the publisher's web site, Find It can not link directly to full text. Sometimes the best Find It can do is to take you to the table of contents or the journal's home page, and you'll have to navigate the publisher's site yourself to get to the full text. Essentially, a full text link in Find It means that full text is available, but you may have to do some work to get to it.

10. Why does the number of options in the Find It window vary?

When you click on the Find It button, the system runs through the the library’s Find It database to see what services are available for that particular article or citation. Only those services which are available will display.

11. Why are there multiple windows?

When you click on the Find It button, a menu window is generated listing all the services available for that item. When you select one of those services, a third window is generated, and it remains the window in which all activities generated from the Find It window take place. Using Alt-Tab to navigate through the various windows is handy.

12. I want to find a particular article, but I don’t have all the information. Can Find It help me with this?

Yes, you can use Find It. Just use the Find It CitationLinker. Fill in the complete journal title (no truncation allowed) and provide the date and any other information you have about a particular article. The Find It menu will provide you with the options for getting the article. You can also use Find It to check whether we have a journal available online.

13. Still have questions or need more help with Find It?
