Private Wireless Router Configuration and Policy
Personal Wireless Router Policy
It is college policy that faculty, staff and students who choose to install "private" Wireless Access Points (WAPs) and routers on the college network must register, connect, and configure these devices according to college guidelines. This policy is designed to protect the security of the shared college network and to minimize interference with the college's wireless network.
Faculty, staff and students are responsible for operating "private" wireless access points/routers in such a way that they do not interfere with the operation of the college's network. The Information Technology (IT) department does not provide support for "private" wireless access points, routers, or networks. If this equipment interferes in any way with the college network, the corresponding network port/jack will be disconnected in accordance with the college's policy on Ethical Use of Computing and Information Resources and Privileges.
The individual who sets up a "private" wireless access point, router, or network is responsible for the online activities of those individuals using that network device. If disciplinary action is necessary based on Internet traffic coming from that network device, the individual who set up the private network is held responsible.
Routers (wired or wireless)
Because most wireless access points also function as routers, there is no need for or benefit to using personal routers on campus. The college attempts to provide a network jack/port for every person in every residence hall room. However, if the room does not have a jack/port for each person, IT provides switches at no cost to students.
Configure the wireless access point as follows (IT cannot provide specific instructions because every device is different):
- Plug into your wireless router and connect to its web interface page. In most cases, it will either be http://192.168.0.1, http://192.168.1.1, or http://192.168.2.1. If you don’t know the username and/or password, you can usually look up the documentation on the web for your router’s model to find the default username and password.
- Generally, wireless routers come with a default WPA key. It is fine to use the default key or you can change it if you like. Ensure you are using a WEP, WPA, or WPA2 key and that it has been enabled. WPA2 is the best option. WPA and WEP are acceptable. Do not set a password that is the same as your college password. This way you can share it with your roommate and friends if you like.
- Change the WAP/Router manager or admin password to something other than the manufacturer's default. This should never be the same as your WPA or WEP key or any of your Beloit College passwords.
- Turn off DHCP or NAT (Network Address Translation). Note: You will lose connectivity after doing this. Plug your Ethernet cable in from the wall to one of the standard ports on the hub (NOT the uplink port). This allows IT to serve DHCP through your hub to any devices that connect to it.
- Follow the process required for the Policy on Computers Connected to the Beloit College Network
- Register each computer to the network through the Beloit College Network Registration page
The alternate option is to let your wireless hub serve your computer with its own DHCP or NAT addresses. If you do this, you should not share the connection with other students. If you do share your connection (not recommended), all traffic of other students will be registered under your name and you will be responsible for their network traffic. Furthermore, they will be consuming your network bandwidth quota.
If you have problems getting these steps to work, bring your wireless router to IT in Mayer Hall along with your laptop and we will assist in getting it working for you.
Note: If wireless access points are set up in adjacent or nearby rooms, they may interfere with each other and reduce the Internet performance of both. IT is not responsible for these conflicts.
