Faculty and Staff Services

General Information
The Beloit College Information Services and Resources (ISR) Division provides access to information resources, supports their use, and serves as a center for engaged learning.  Staff located in Mayer Hall and Col. Robert H. Morse Library and Richard Black Information Center collaborate and consult with faculty, students, and staff to provide a learning and living environment dedicated to the cultivation of liberally educated persons.  The Library’s homepage provides access to the online catalog (Belcat), a rich collection of electronic resources, and information about Beloit College Library services. For information about College technology resources and services visit our Information Technology (IT) home page. Policies related to technology purchases, the Academic Technology Fund Plan (ATF) for faculty equipment replacements and other Library and IT services can be found on the ISR Plans and Policies web page.

Archives and Special Collections
Beloit College Archives collects and maintains documents and material of historic significance to Beloit College and is located on the lower level of the Morse Library with Special Collections and the Paula Black Seminar Room.  Archivist Fred Burwell assists students, faculty and staff with discovery, access, and interpretation of these historical collections.  To arrange an individual visit, classroom research instruction session, or research support for students tailored to a specific course topic, contact Fred at ext. 2485 or burwellf@beloit.edu.

Beloit College Digital Collections
The Beloit College Digital Collections provide online access to materials from the Archives, The Logan Museum of Anthropology, and the Wright Museum of Art.  ISR strives to digitize collections that are heavily used or particularly relevant to courses offered by the college in order to allow more convenient access. In addition, the Beloit College Digital Collections house repositories of student and faculty work. Ideas for future archival, student, or faculty collections are always welcome. For more information, please contact Digital Resources Librarian Josh Hickman at ext. 2246 or hickmanj@beloit.edu.

Course-related Research Instruction and Support
Working in collaboration with faculty, librarians will meet with classes or prepare customized, course-integrated materials showing useful sources, search strategies, how to evaluate the results, and how to locate and retrieve relevant resources. Librarians are also available to consult with faculty about designing assignments that make the best use of the wide variety of Library resources. Contact Chris Nelson at ext. 2544 or nelsoncn@beloit.edu.

Email and Network Accounts
Campus email and network accounts have been created in advance for you. Beloit College uses Google Apps for Education (GAE) on campus. If you do not have the information related to your account, please contact IT Support at 608-363-2067. You may also visit the IT offices located on the second floor of Mayer Hall.

Faculty - Additional Research Support
University of Wisconsin-Madison extends borrowing privileges to Beloit College faculty. Contact the Reference Desk (ext. 2544) if you have questions about how this process works.

Information Technology (IT) Support
Questions about college-owned office computers and software, accessing the campus networks (wired and wireless), and making technology purchases may be directed to IT Support.

Innovation Space
The Library Innovation Space is a collaborative learning space located on the Library's main floor that is available for use by students, faculty, and staff.  Resources available include software to create digital projects, digital scanners, photo editing, video editing, and web design tools, as well as a dedicated print station.  These resources are available during all hours the Library is open.  Assistance in using these resources is available from IT Support just steps away on Sunday-Thursday evenings during the academic term.

Instructional Technology
Instructional Technology staff provide training and support for innovative technology resources for teaching and learning.  For additional information about these services, contact Jedidiah Rex at ext. 2456 or rexj@beloit.edu.

Interlibrary Loan
Books and periodical articles not owned by the Beloit College Library may be obtained, usually within 7-14 days and sometimes even sooner. Interlibrary loan services are free for all faculty, staff, and students. Interlibrary loan requests initiated through our online catalog - BelCat - and e-journal discovery service - FindIt - streamline the submission process.  Requests may also be submitted using the Interlibrary Loan form through the Library home page.  Contact Cindy Cooley at ext. 2567 or cooleyl@beloit.edu or Chris Nelson at ext. 2544 or nelsoncn@beloit.edu with any questions you may have.

Learning Management System
Moodle is the college’s learning or course management system. For more information, please see the Moodle Overview and Moodle Policy webpages that contain many useful resources related to using Moodle. If you have questions or want to start to use Moodle, please send an email to moodle@beloit.edu.

Learning Studio
The Library's Learning Studio may be reserved by faculty and staff, when not in use by ISR staff.  Use is limited to those needing computer technology for special, one-time instructional use only.  The room is located on the Library's lower level and is equipped with twelve workstations, one instructor's station, and a data projector.  Printing access is nearby.  Specialized software used to create digital projects is available on all the computers.

Library Borrowing Privileges
Faculty and staff may check out books for one semester. Books requested by another user may be recalled after one month. AV material loans are 14-28 days. Renewal of many Library materials can be accomplished online using the Library catalog’s (Belcat) “MyAccount” feature.

Library Reserves
Please refer to the Library Reserves page for procedures and deadlines for placing materials on reserve for your courses. The old adage still holds true that the sooner you can get us your reserve materials/orders the better! Contact Deb Lynch at ext. 2230 with questions about the Library reserves process.

Ordering Library Materials
Selecting content for the Library's collections is a responsibility shared by the librarians, faculty, staff, and students of Beloit College. In order to provide access to the materials most relevant to the curriculum as well as the teaching and learning goals of a liberal education, faculty recommendations are critical. This collaborative approach to collection management focuses the subject knowledge of faculty on the content evaluation of materials and this expertise improves the content of the collection – the community's resource. Developing new areas of the collection may require special planning and consideration. We will make every effort to meet your needs within our budgetary and collection scope limits.

  • Journal orders:
Contact Josh Hickman at ext. 2466 or hickmanj@beloit.edu. Requests for new journal subscriptions are best accompanied by a rationale, and may initiate a librarian and faculty review of existing department or program-related subscriptions.

The Portal
The Portal
is your tool for viewing advisee transcripts and schedules, class rosters, enter grades and find other useful information that is recorded in the college’s enterprise resource planning software, Jenzabar EX. You may log into the Portal directly or through the button on the Terrarium using your network username and password. Please contact IT Support if you have difficulty logging into the Portal or have any questions.

Reference and IT Support
Reference staff is available most hours the Library is open to provide help to researchers and answer questions about the Library collection and services. In addition to drop-in face-to-face service researchers may consult with staff via email and IM, or schedule a research consultation.  You can also get help in the Library with your computer technology questions at IT Support located next to the Reference Desk

Research Consultation and Support
Students may not know that librarians are research consultants.  Faculty recommendations can help students make that connection.  Please consider including this sample text, or similar information, in your syllabus or Moodle pages:
For help with research, you can stop at the Library Reference Desk or call 363-2544 to ask questions most hours the library is open.  You can also send an email to libref@beloit.edu for assistance.  Library staff will consult on research strategies, database selection, and finding sources for your assignments.  More information is on the Library web page at http://www.beloit.edu/library.

Wired and Wireless Network Access
The wired, fiber optic network extends throughout campus and is the primary method of access. Wireless access is available in most academic buildings and other selected areas of campus. Instructions for setting up your computer for using the wireless network can be found on the wireless information page. Please contact IT Support for more information about using the wireless network.
