Geology and the Liberal Arts in Practice

All Beloit College students satisfactorily complete (usually during the junior year) a Liberal Arts in Practice (LAP) experience, which is the equivalent of at least 1 unit of applied or original work extending beyond the traditional classroom. Through undertaking and reflecting on these experiences, students connect their experiences beyond the traditional classroom with their learning in the classroom and transfer the skills developed in those experiences into other settings (from the Beloit College Registrar, http://www.beloit.edu/registrar/lap/ )

Geology students may complete the LAP requirement through courses, research, internships, or other activities that relate to geology.  Alternatively, they may complete the LAP experience through other activities such as serving as a resident assistant or teaching assistant, engaging in leadership activities on- or off- campus, or other activities that connect theory to practice.  Three options are available for completing the LAP requirement:

  1. “All inclusive” LAP-designated courses or credit-bearing experience, including some study abroad programs and credit-bearing internships (LAP-1)
  2. A LAP experience followed by successful completion of LAP-2 designated course (LAP-2)
  3. LAP syntheses that combine a LAP experience with reflection and a public presentation (LAP-3)

Some options in Geology:

Field Geology (GEOL215)

All geology majors complete a five-week summer field methods course (Field Geology, GEOL215).  The Field Geology course takes place primarily in Wyoming.  Students spend time learning and mapping the geology of the Big Horn Basin, the Owl Creek Mountains, and the Seminoe Mountains. Many geology and environmental geology majors will complete their LAP requirement through Field Geology (LAP-1).
