  1. To provide students with a richly inspired introduction to inquiry, critical thinking, and collaboration in the liberal arts

Every FYI section focuses on a topic selected and developed by the individual FYI leader in collaboration with other colleagues participating in the FYI program.  The program reflects the belief that the desire and freedom to explore an area of mutual interest with others can be an inspiring and rewarding way to begin a liberal arts education at Beloit College.  Every seminar presents a rich selection of materials and activities that invites a small group of students to pose important questions, to think critically from a variety of perspectives, and to communicate effectively with others.

  2. To acquaint students with the mission and values of Beloit College

Beginning in New Student Days and continuing in the semester, FYI students learn about the College mission and values, as reflected in our mission statement and other supporting documentation, our curriculum, our departments and programs as areas of study, campus policies and practices, and our co-curricular experiences and opportunities.  Students develop their understanding of how Beloit College encourages the pursuit of knowledge in and outside of the classroom, cultivates a sense of both freedom and responsibility, and is committed to academic and social integrity.

  3. To develop students’ reading skill

The ability to read effectively is vital to a student’s success as a Beloit College student.  All FYI leaders assign reading related to their topic, but the reading component of the class is also intended to develop critical thinking and effective reading skills.  Instructors therefore address strategies for effective reading generally, as well as the specific techniques most pertinent to the types of reading used and the outcomes they have assigned in their respective courses.

  4. To develop students’ writing skills

FYI leaders help students to become more aware of expectations for effective writing at the college level, and provide strategies to help students improve as writers. All students engage in a regular writing practice throughout the semester, completing the equivalent of 15-25 pages of writing that is subject to response from the FYI leader.  These assignments can vary in length, type, and medium, and they should provide students with some variety, instructive feedback, and opportunity for improvement. FYI leaders therefore acquaint students with strategies for effective writing process, identify the elements of good writing, articulate their criteria for evaluation, and provide students with resource support.

  5. To develop students’ oral presentation skills

Because of the small class size and seminar format of FYI, all students have the opportunity to participate in class discussion on a regular basis.  Moreover, all students deliver a minimum of two formal presentations.  FYI leaders provide instruction and feedback on strategies for effective speaking, including planning and organization of subject matter, use of visual aids, and oral delivery techniques.

  6. To develop students’ ability to conduct research and use it in their work

Participating as a member of the academic conversation is a critical element of a liberal arts education, and engaging in research and making use of the work of others in their own work is therefore an important part of a Beloit College education that begins in the first semester.  All students receive instruction and feedback on locating, evaluating, using, and citing sources correctly and effectively in their own work.  Students have the opportunity to develop these skills throughout the semester.

  7. To develop students’ awareness and understanding of, as well as engagement with, the Beloit College campus and the community beyond it

Beginning in New Student Days and continuing through the semester, FYI acquaints students with the presence, interests, and needs of various communities within and beyond Beloit College.  Seminars address engaging with these communities, participating in effective community service, and pursuing integrative opportunities for engaged learning.

  8. To develop a strong mentoring and advising relationship between FYI leader and student to facilitate good academic planning and the development of the social and co-curricular aspects of the student’s Beloit experience

FYI leaders address academic advising concerns with students in a combination of classroom activities and individual conferences, as well as provide students with information about, and support for, developing social, co-curricular, and career interests. FYI leaders have contact with seminar members outside of normal classroom meetings and participate in activities that cultivate this mentoring relationship.  FYI leaders commit to serving as students’ advisor for two years.
