Beloit College has long had a commitment to encouraging and promoting international education - through its curriculum, through the diversity of its student body, and through the extensive opportunities it has cultivated for study abroad.
The College's commitment to international education is also evident in the financial assistance it provides not only to students coming from other countries to study at Beloit, but also to American and international students who wish to study in countries other than the United States.
Because Beloit College students have a wide variety of programs and destinations from which to choose, and because each of these programs has different costs associated with it, it is very difficult to generalize about how study abroad will affect a student's financial aid package. There are some key points to note, however:
- In order to be considered for Beloit College financial aid while on a study abroad program, a student must work directly with the College's Office of International Education. Students who do not coordinate their study abroad arrangements with the Office of International Education, or who opt for a program that is not approved by that Office, will not be considered for Beloit College financial aid.
- Students who are considering studying abroad should consult with the Office of International Education as early as possible in their tenure at Beloit to discuss the variety of programs available, the specific nature or thrust of each program, and the associated costs.
- Students should not wait until they have applied and been accepted for a program before researching the financial aid ramifications. Students should consult with the Office of International Education, determine the costs involved, and then schedule an appointment with the Financial Aid Office to discuss how the program will affect their financial aid package.
- Beloit College requires students to live in a College residence and be on a College Board plan a minimum of six semesters. Beloit College financial aid packages reflect this expectation and presume that the student will be living on campus and on a meal plan. It is a policy of the Financial Aid Office to decrease Beloit College need-based gift aid by $1,100 per semester when a student does not live in College housing and does not participate in a College meal plan. This policy does apply to students who elect to study abroad.
- It is the student's responsibility to inform the Financial Aid Office that he or she will be participating in a particular off-campus program. It is also the student's responsibility to inform the Financial Aid Office what the costs associated with the program will be.
Students who are interested in study abroad will find detailed information on the Office of International Education website. On the website students can search for approved programs based on academic discipline, language, or country. Students will also find specific information on costs and financial aid, a table of program fees, and a budget worksheet.
