Parent Newsletter-May 2013

Your students continue to amaze
Just a few short weeks ago, we had yet another opportunity to enjoy the amazing things students are learning at Beloit. The 37th annual student symposium didn’t disappoint, and the students left us in awe of their talent. From sessions on the growing abuse of prescription drugs in the United States to analyzing the benefits of using Muppets and puppets to educate children, it was nothing short of a day of intrigue, excitement, and, yes, a few proud tears. Nearly 90 students kept us at the edge of our seats, and a few of the sessions were captured live on video—check them out here.

Commencement is Sunday, May 12

Congratulations to the families of seniors!  Get the skinny on Commencement activities, including ceremony details, what to do in the case of inclement weather, departmental receptions, lodging, and the Parent’s Hospitality Tent here. Addressing the class this year is U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.).

If you or friends and family members can’t make it to Beloit for the event, tune in via live stream at www.beloit.edu/live. The weekend would not be complete without singing, dancing, and Beloitish insights, either. Baccalaureate, held Saturday, May 11 at 4:45 p.m. in Eaton Chapel, will also be live streamed—tune in!

They’re back!
Before you know it, nestled in their childhood bed could very well be your grown child—possibly staying up until the wee hours and slumbering on through 1 p.m. Regardless of how their sleeping habits may or may not have changed, you will likely recognize a few changes in your Beloiter. College is a transformational experience, and although it may take a few weeks for everyone to adjust to a new living situation, we hope you take this opportunity to get reacquainted with your Beloiter and enjoy learning more about his or her life-changing moments.

We have a few suggestions to help ease the transition back to home life. Keep the lines of communication open. Talk about expectations from the beginning—such as curfew, who is taking care of that mountain of laundry, and summer goals. Discover together how your relationship is changing, often in healthy ways, and take a little time to talk through the year’s accomplishments and challenges. We hope you enjoy not only your time together, but also seeing the impact of your student’s Beloit education.
