Rachel McCarty volunteers with Caritas, a local food pantry and clothing room. On February 25th, Caritas and ECHO held their biannual Empty Bowl Event in the cafeteria of Beloit Memorial High School. The Empty Bowl event is a joint effort to raise money to feed the hungry. The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in our community. At this Empty Bowl Event, 1,035 people were served in just 4 hours. Over 97 gallons of soup were consumed! The turnout for this event was over double the turnout of the first Empty Bowl Beloit! Success!
