"The faculty work to make the dance major a holistic experience, a true liberal arts degree. ACDFA, Chelonia, my theatre seminar in London and my summer internship at the San Francisco performing Arts Library and Museum have shaped my education."

Chrystle Mercer, Freshman
Majors/Minors: Dance, Psychology
Clubs/Activities: Chelonia and other dance productions
"I came to the Beloit dance program not knowing what to expect. I was amazed on the day of the Chelonia audition at how supportive, loving, and encouraging every single dancer was to each other. I immediately felt comfortable and welcome. All of the amazing dancers at Beloit have this miraculous energy that creates a great dance environment to grow as a dancer and have fun."

Maggie Koller, Junior
Majors/Minors: Psychology and Dance
Clubs/Activities: Mortar Board, Phi Chi, Phi Beta Kappa, and involvement in the productions of most annual dance performances
"Each year two guest choreographers come to campus to teach classes and to choreograph dances for Chelonia. Dancers have the opportunity to work with many teachers, besides Chris and Margaret while they are at Beloit. Having other professors of dance come to teach class here has helped me to discover which styles of dance and which approaches to choreography I prefer. It has helped me continue to develop my particular style of dance as well."

Katrina Sterba, Sophomore
Majors/Minors: Spanish, Dance
Symposium topics: Dance Opportunities in Ecuador, Gillman Scholarship
Clubs/Activities: Breakdancing, Spanish Club
Study Abroad: Venture Grant to hike across Spain (Summer 2004)
"My interest in breakdancing led me to pursue other dance courses offered at Beloit, and now I am a dance major because of the dedication and passion I felt in the department. The project in Ecuador (teaching dance with a fellow dance student from Beloit) is a wonderful opportunity for me to combine my two majors, Dance and Spanish, and also my two passions in life."

Erika Curry-Elrod, Freshman
Majors/Minors: Dance, Physics, Art
Clubs/Activities: Breakdancing Club, Chelonia, Senior Shows, December Workshop, ACDFA
"I feel very confident about the preparation for my major. Chris Johnson really makes sure we are taking all the classes we need to fulfill that requirement. I feel very well on the way to getting everything done and still being able to go abroad for a semester."

Cameron Growden, Sophomore
Majors/Minors: Dance/Creative Writing
Clubs/Activities: Dance, Theatre, French, Breakdancing
"Our new dance studio is phenomenal and it is so much easier for all the student choreographers to fit their rehearsals in somewhere. It is now also possible to have multiple classes effectively at the same time."

Jeanne Pfeffer, Sophomore
Majors/Minors: Dance
"The community of dance majors is one of the major perks. Some of my best friends are dance majors. We spend so many sweaty. long hours together. It would be hard to not get along and support each other."

Leah Raffanti, Senior
Majors/Minors: Theatre Arts – Dance, Women’s and Gender Studies, Study Abroad: Ghana
"Before I made my decision about coming to Beloit, I made one last trip to visit and make sure that Beloit was where I wanted to be. During this trip, I sat in on a Jazz I class and was blown away. It was at Beloit that my passion for movement was cultivated and challenged. I was given a supportive and safe space to push myself physically and creatively. It was here that I found my creative voice through choreography. I am a huge dance nerd. I absolutely ate up all my dance classes, but especially the classroom classes such at Dance History and Kinesiology. I loved the challenge that the faculty at Beloit offered me both in the dance studio and in the class room."
