Chelonia
Chelonia Dance Company, Beloit College's
resident dance group, performs their annual dance
concert each spring in the Laura Aldrich Neese Theatre.
The all-student company is directed by associate
professor, Chris Johnson. Dances are presented from
faculty, guest artists and student choreography. More

Two of the pieces—one faculty/guest work and
one student work—are chosen to be presented
at the American College Dance Festival Association
(ACDFA) regional festivals in the spring. Since 2001,
Beloit’s pieces have been regularly selected
for the prestigious gala concerts at ACDFA. More

Additional Performances
Beloit College
provides additional opportunities for students to perform
whenever possible such as with guest artists, in student
produced concerts and the annual December Workshop showing
of all student choreographed works.
Musicals
Dancers have been featured
in theatre productions such as Brigadoon, Love
of the Nightingale, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Guys
and Dolls.
Creative Opportunities
Students with creative ideas for special
performances, collaborations, and unique venues are
encouraged to pursue their visions. Students regularly
produce their own concerts, put together outdoor
performances, collaborate with art and music students,
and perform in areas throughout the campus. These
performances vary from elaborately choreographed
projects to collaborations with music students and
late night shows in the C-Haus.
Professional Exploration
Dance students have contact with working
professionals both on and off campus. The department
regularly engages guest artists to work with students
to create pieces, conduct workshops and produce performances.
Some of our recent guests include: Joel Hall, Kirby
Reed, Natasha Shirokova of Moscow’s Modern
Dance Theater, B. J. Sullivan, Linda Lehovec, Erica
Wilson-Perkins, BlackEarth Collaborative Arts, Jin
Wen Yu, Paula Frasz, Catherine Cabeen of Bill T.
Jones Dance Company, and Aiko Kinoshita, director
of Seattle’s AcornDance.
