English as a Second Language
Director's Note: There is a typo in our brochure regarding credit hours for ESL. ESL students receive 12 semester hours for the 8-week session and 6 semester hours for the 4-week sessions.
For most of its 31-year history, the Center for Language Studies has offered a summer, intensive ESL option. Our professional instructors bring a wealth of teaching experience to the classroom and provide individualized attention to students.
The CLS program offers an intensive program for English language learners (ELL). This communicative, academically focused course will help intermediate-level learners further develop the four main skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Our primary goal is to prepare students with the language skills necessary to pursue their education at a college or university in the United States. Excellent resource materials and technology help to facilitate classroom instruction.
Classroom content will include essay and research paper writing, academic lecture listening and note taking, a variety of readings, topical discussion, and academic presentations using innovative technology. Learning happens outside the classroom, too. This residential experience extends language practice over shared meals, conversation in residential halls, and evening activities. A variety of day trips, guest speakers, and conversation partner connections help students to improve their speaking fluency so they might communicate well with people from many cultures.
This is truly an immersion experience. The setting of a small, liberal arts college campus in the Midwest provides students with opportunities to learn about American college life, talk with professors, explore nearby museums, and connect with the local community. Beloit is conveniently located. It is approximately…
· 78 km, 1 hour by car from Madison
· 228 km, 2.5 hours by car from Chicago
· 411 km, 4 hours by car from Minneapolis
During the summer ESL program additional instruction can be arranged for TOEFL preparation.
