Why Classics?

The study of Classics is an entirely selfish endeavor. Its only goal is to understand better who they (the ancient Greeks and Romans) were so that we can understand better who we are. Two ancient thoughts best describe this ideal of Classical Studies:

"For now we look with a mirror into a riddle,
but then we will see face to face."
          (Paul, 1 Cor. 13.12)

          "Know yourself."
          (Inscription written on Apollo's oracular
          temple at Delphi)

It is the understanding and application of these words where Classics begins and ends.
