TUTORING/AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Upward Bound 

  • Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after-school at BMHS (and South Beloit H.S. on Tuesday and Wednesday) from 3 until 4:30 pm.
  • 9 - 12th graders
  • Volunteer college students 
  • Nicole Murphy is the coordinator for this and she supervises the daily operations most days

Help Yourself/Pre-Collegiate

Lunch and Learn

  • at Aldrich and McNeel Middle Schools
  • Volunteer college students
  • Training and orientation given.
  • 2 hour commitment every week (11-1 Monday at McNeel, 11-1 Thursday at Aldrich).

Todd Reading Club

  • 30 unpaid tutors needed, Mondays and Thursdays about 4-5:15pm this year, starting Feb. 6th.

South Beloit High School

  • 1-15 volunteers needed
  • Help tutor high school students in math, science, social studies, or English.
  • Times available to tutor, 7:30 am - 8:00 am, Noon - 12:35 pm, and 3:30 pm - 4:00 pm. Days are flexible.
  • Transportation will be provided.

MENTORING PROGRAMS

GEM (Girls Empowerment Through Mentoring)

  • occurs occasionally throughout the semester at one or both of the local middle schools
  • after-school program for mentoring middle-school girls on pertinent issues (i.e health, relationships, stress management, body image)

Girls Who Rock

  • occurs occasionally once a week for 6 weeks throughout the semester at one of the local elementary schools
  • long after-school program through the Girl Scouts
  • mentors elementary school girls on issues they may be facing

Women's Economic Empowerment Center by YWCA

  • located at the Merrill Community Center, all semester long
  • help young women create resumes and fill out job applications
  • some childcare opportunity also available

Gaston/Hackett Mentoring Program

  • 11:00am-1:00pm - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays.  45 minute block depending on students lunch period/recess. 
  • 5K-3rd grade students  
  • Program objective:  to give students a positive, consistent adult role model who is not connected to his/her academics or home life.

COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAMS

Pathways Project

  • at the Pathways Center, 20 Eclipse Center (the old Beloit Mall)
  • Volunteers would help high-school students with resumes, job searches, etc. or tutoring students
  • Another opportunity would be to work with the students on job sites doing construction.
  • Volunteers can start as soon as they fill out an application and a background check is completed, which usually takes a week.
  • Volunteers needed a couple hours of the week anytime Mon-Fri during the school day.

Fresh Start

  • located in the Eclipse Center, close to the Beloit Public Library
  • Volunteer college students
  • 1:1 tutoring with students in Beloit seeking to receive their diploma through online classes, and working on a construction site.

Caritas Empty Bowl Project 

  • every Thursday, 3-5pm until February 25, 2012

  • involves handpainting bowls that will be auctioned off to support the organization
