Community-Based Learning promotes academically-grounded, community engagement. From one hour encounters to semester long explorations, community-based learning is tailored to enhance academic goals in all disciplines.
For instance, philosophy students have used their experience as volunteers to reflect on what it means to “give time.” Sociology students have mentored at-risk youth to better understand juvenile delinquency. Theater students have collected oral histories and woven them into a community-constructed play. Community-based learning takes many forms: field trips, mentoring, quantitative research, ethnography, or service, as well as internships, special projects, Venture grants and fellowships.
