Job Shadowing

Program Overview
It is by observing and doing the work associated with a particular career, that a student can gain a broader understanding of what that career entails and how their interests and skills may apply in a particular setting. While internships are a great way to get such experience, many students cannot commit the time required for an internship during the school year.

As an alternative, we have established an externship program, also known as job shadowing, as a means of connecting students with career mentors in the local area, their home towns, or other convenient locations. This can be a great method for employers to connect with a talented pool of candidates with very little commitment. There is no minimum hourly requirement, but we suggest at least several days on the job site.

During the school year and on breaks, Career Services assists Beloit College students with arranging opportunities to explore a particular career field by shadowing a professional.

Bacon Know-Thyself Fund
This is an alumni (George'23 and Elgeva'26 Bacon) endowed fund for sophomores to offset their job shadowing participation expenses. Sophomores participate in career assessment activities that tie to their job shadowing experiences. Learn more about these opportunities by contacting the Liberal Arts in Practice Center.

Spring Break Job Shadowing Trips
In collaboration with the Office of Community-Based Learning, Career Services co-sponsors spring break job shadowing trips. The 2011 Spring Break Sophomore Job Shadowing in Washington, DC is the first trip of this kind and future trips are anticipated.

Employers open to hosting a student or students interested in shadowing may contact LAPC.
