Buc Report: Basketball players spent break on the court, visiting California

January 22, 2014 at 7:52 am

While classes and most activities were on hiatus, the Bucs basketball teams were busy over break, playing a half dozen games‒some of which were in California.

“It’s a great opportunity for team-building and to play teams outside our region we don’t normally see,” says Head Coach Brian Vraney of their biennial trips.

In California, the men’s team beat University of La Verne 70-69 and lost narrowly to University of Redlands 62-61. Those were the team’s last two non-conference games.

“I was happy with how the guys played out in California overall,” Vraney says. “We played two tough teams.”

He also pointed out that during the game against University of La Verne James Lazarcik’14 became the 20th member of the Beloit 1,000-Point Club with a pair of free throws at the 11:36 mark of the second half.  His 20 points, along with 11 rebounds, gives him 1,006, placing him at No. 18 on the list.

“It was a career highlight for him and for the program in general,” Vraney says.

Lazarcik also earned Midwest Conference Basketball Player of the Week honors during break.

While in California, the players also got a chance to take in the sights, hike, and visit the Santa Monica Pier.

Before and after the California trip, the team also had strong wins against Knox College and Illinois College, scoring 75-69 and 80-75, respectively.

The men’s basketball team next plays St. Norbert College on Wednesday (Jan. 22 ) at 5:30 p.m. at home and again at home on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 3 p.m. against Monmouth College.

As for women’s basketball, Head Coach Jennifer McCormick calls the California trip one of the highlights of their break.

Though they fell to the University of Redlands and Chapman University out in the Golden State, McCormick said her players took away a lot from those games. Plus, they had a lot of fun when they weren’t playing, visiting Disneyland and going to the beach.

The other highlight of break for the women’s team, according to McCormick, was winning the Knox College game 94-87.

“It was a good battle all the way through, and we came out on top there,” McCormick says.

A couple players also experienced what their coach calls monumental individual milestones during break.

Lauren McNanna’14 broke the career free throws made record at Beloit, and Lana Wieseman’16 tied the Beloit single-game scoring mark in addition to earning Midwest Conference Basketball Player of the Week honors.

The women’s team next plays St. Norbert College on Wednesday (Jan. 22) at 7:30 p.m. at home and Monmouth College on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 5 p.m. at home.

“We will be finally back at home (this) week, and we’d love to have people come now that they’re back on campus,” McCormick says.
