What are the three most important things you packed in your suitcase? Why?

  1. Shorts. It’s really hot so dress for the weather.
  2. Toothbrush--nobody likes stinky breath.
  3. Malaria medication--take it when you’re supposed to! A few people in my program skipped pills and paid the price. As you can imagine, it wasn’t pleasant.

What is the most unexpected thing you encountered during your off-campus study experience? The most unexpected thing was being approached on the street and asked to be in a movie. Apparently they needed a white person. I agreed and spent the next few days filming in a town called Abri.

What is the best meal you’ve had abroad? I never got tired of rice and veggie stew.

What did you miss most from home/Beloit? I missed the variety of food. I’m not saying that Ghanaian food is bad, but I was used to having more options.

What has been your proudest/most exciting moment abroad? My proudest moment was when my fellow cast members and I received a standing ovation for our performance. That’s a good feeling anywhere, but it’s cooler in Ghana. I got the, “they really like me!” feeling.

What did you bring home as a souvenir? A huge elephant mask. It’s looking at me as I write this.
