Museum Mondays: New student-curated exhibitions, acquisitions on tap

September 1, 2013 at 4:54 pm

The Wright Museum invites the campus and community to their fall reception Thursday, where  new student-curated exhibits will be unveiled, along with new acquisitions. The reception will take place Thursday (Sept. 5) at 4 p.m. in the Wright Museum Courtyard.

For faculty members: here it is—your opportunity to see how you can incorporate the museum into your classes. For a new or returning students: come see the hard work of your friends and classmates and see what you can do at the museum. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibits on display include:

The Sacred Lives of Objects, North Gallery
Curated by the students of Natalie Gummer’s religious studies class, this exhibit was displayed at the Logan Museum of Anthropology last spring. With a different venue and additional objects, the exhibit is worth revisiting.

Soul’s Compass, Neese Gallery
The product of the 2013 Exhibition Workshop; students were given the theme of “pilgrimage” on day one, and by day five “Soul’s Compass” was installed. With traditional art objects, artifacts from President Bierman, and a video installation, this completely student-curated exhibit is worth a look.

The Trash Caste, South Gallery
Based on this year’s FYI reading, student curator Ellen Waneke’15 brings the words of Katherine Boo to life through her curating of photographs by Amiran White. The show documents the lives and living conditions of the “rag-pickers” of Annawadi.

Hollensteiner Gallery
The reinstall of the Hollensteiner Gallery for the fall semester includes student curators as well. Prints from Francisco De Goya’s “disasters of war” organized by Elizabeth Durfess’15, and a selection of Japanese woodblock prints by recent graduate Sara Conn’13, accompany a new acquisition to the collections and some other art objects from our permanent collection that you may not have seen before.
