Policy of the Week: Political signage

October 30, 2012 at 9:02 pm

Dear Beloiters,

There are only a few days left to vote if you haven't done so already! There are many ways to display your voting pride, such as dressing up like your favorite candidate for Halloween or wearing an "I VOTED" sticker or by encouraging your friends to get down to the polls. You may also attach signs to your residence hall doors and windows.  But did you know that you may display political signs OUTSIDE on the residential side of campus? Yeah, who knew?!

Here is what you do if you wish to support your man (Obama, Romney, Johnson, Goode, ____) or woman (Jill Stein is running for the Green Party) in the upcoming election via political campaign signage:

(1) If you live in a special interest house, you may display up to two political campaign signs in your front lawn with a 2/3 affirmative vote from the residents living in the house.

(2) If you live in a residence hall, you may display up to one political campaign sign on the quad side of the building with a 2/3 affirmative vote from all residents living in the house.*

*There are other stipulations regarding where the signs may be placed in the quad area, as well as how to document the affirmative vote. Please refer to the Political Campaign Sign Policy. The college is a politically neutral institution, and thus, the public displays of signs are an undertaking of individuals. The signs must have the following disclaimer:

“This event/brochure, etc. is an individual statement of support by [insert name of individual or group of individuals], without use of any Beloit College resources, and it should not be construed as support or endorsement by Beloit College for any candidate or elected official.”

HAPPY VOTING AND 2012 ELECTION YEAR!

With Love from Your 2012-2013 Stu-Pol Committee,

Erik Carlson’15, Dana DiMaggio’14, Hope Doucet’15, Hannah Ireland’13, Reine Lucas’2015, Rachel Machunski’15, and John Winkelmann
