Beloit College’s student-run radio station WBCR (90.3 FM) is back on the Internet waves. Its webstream, which has experienced on-and-off issues for nearly two years, went back up in March.
Karin Carlson’12, a WBCR station manager, cited the summer of 2010 as the origin of the webstream’s issues. That was when the webstream was switched from a school server to an off-site server.
After issues with outside servers both semesters last year, WBCR made a Buncha-K proposal to use a new webstream server last fall.
With approval, WBCR started working with a server system called StreamOn. It came with something they had not had with previous servers—an actual computer for the WBCR office.
However, this new system has not been without issues. It required some rewiring, phone tag, and emails. Carlson said there are still some technical issues that will be fixed over the summer.
“I’m definitely looking forward to it being all fixed,” Carlson says. “It was really stressful not to have it up. Complaints have dropped dramatically [since it went back up].”
