Beloit College figured prominently in the annual U.S. News rankings of the “Best Colleges,” released today. The college is included in the upper reaches of its list of national liberal arts colleges, appears on lists recognizing educational institutions that offer students the best value, and ties at number 4 in Up-and-Comer liberal arts colleges.

“The U.S. News college rankings serve as a useful tool for the public to filter the vast amount of information available to prospective students and their families,” said Nancy Benedict, Beloit’s vice president for enrollment. “I think, too, that families understand the methodology is not perfect. Nonetheless, it is gratifying to see that Beloit appears on those lists which we, too, value as measure of quality and success:  Study abroad, a robust financial aid program, and best undergraduate teaching.”

Beloit was included in the following areas:

National Liberal Arts Colleges
In its ranking of the top 236 liberal arts colleges nationwide, Beloit is included in the number 60 spot.

Up-and-Comers
Beloit tied with Pennsylvania’s Allegheny College on a short list of “Up-and-Comer” liberal arts colleges. This list recognizes institutions believed to have recently made the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus, or facilities. (Beloit ranked at number 4.)

Strong Commitment to Teaching
Beloit also was included on a short list of liberal arts colleges recognized for their “strong commitment to teaching,” based on ratings by administrators at regional peer institutions. (Beloit was included at number 15).

Great Schools, Great Prices
Beloit placed 35th on a “best value” listing of 40 liberal arts colleges. The list is compiled by comparing each college’s U.S. News ranking with its cost. As the magazine points out, “Only schools ranked in or near the top half of their categories are included” in the analysis.

Strong Focus on Student Success – Study Abroad
Beloit was included on a list of 27 national colleges and universities recognized for their commitment to “substantial academic work abroad for credit…and considerable interaction with the local culture.”

A-Plus Schools for B Students
The college was also included in this year’s issue on a non-ranked listing of 78 national liberal arts colleges where good students – B students – have a “decent shot of being accepted and thriving.”
